Robert E. Lee appears here in a lithograph credited to J.L. Giles and published by George E. Perine of New York, a portrait print issued sometime between 1860 and 1900 and held by the Library of Congress. Lee's name is placed in the title as "Genl.," reflecting the rank he held as a Confederate commander during the Civil War, when he led the Army of Northern Virginia through campaigns that included Gettysburg in 1863. Portraits like this one circulated widely in the decades after the war, when many Americans, North and South, wanted images of the leading figures of the conflict. Its value today lies in showing how Lee's public image was shaped for popular audiences.
