Here Robert E. Lee is shown on Traveler, the gray horse he rode through much of the Civil War and one of the most recognized animals of the Confederacy. The title's phrase "photographed from life" was a common claim on images of the period, meant to signal that the likeness came from a sitting rather than a copied engraving. The shelflist card links the print to A. Hoen & Co., a Baltimore lithography firm, but gives no date, so the exact method and year of this version remain uncertain. Traveler outlived both the war and Lee, who died in 1870, and the horse's enduring popularity helped make this kind of image a staple of Lee portraiture.
