Dated February 18, 1865, this albumen silver print shows Robert E. Lee in the last weeks before the Confederate surrender, a few months after he had been named general-in-chief of all Confederate armies. The date comes from a shelflist card that the Library of Congress has not verified, so it is worth reading with some caution. Albumen prints were the standard photographic format of the 1860s, made by coating paper with egg white and light-sensitive silver salts and then printing from glass negatives. Joseph Verner Reed gave this example to the library in 1949.
