Made around 1846, this bust-length engraving shows Robert E. Lee years before he became the Confederacy's best-known general, when he was still a young officer in the U.S. Army's Corps of Engineers. Engraved portraits like this one were a common way for a public figure's face to reach readers and print buyers. Lee's later command of the Army of Northern Virginia, including at Gettysburg in 1863, gives such early images their weight today, since they show the man before the war made his name.
