Currier & Ives issued this lithographic portrait of Robert E. Lee in the 1860s, when Lee had become one of the most recognizable figures of the Civil War. Lee commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and was widely admired in the North as well as the South for his dignity and conduct on the battlefield. Printmakers such as Currier & Ives produced inexpensive portraits like this one for a broad public eager to see the men leading the war. The image is a useful reminder of how commercial printing shaped popular views of Civil War leaders.
