Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, is the subject of this reproduction of an older photograph, though its original date and photographer are not recorded on the caption card. Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until the surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, and his name is bound up with the battles of Gettysburg, where his army was defeated in July 1863. Portraits of Lee circulated widely in the decades after the war, when his image was used in memorials and popular prints across the country. Because the record's data is unverified, the sitter's identity is the firmest fact to rely on here.
