What sets this stereograph apart is its subject, a battlefield observatory on East Cemetery Hill, the rise where Union troops rallied on the evening of July 1, 1863, and held through the fighting that followed. By the late 1870s, Gettysburg drew veterans and tourists who wanted to see the ground, and towers like this one let visitors survey the fields below. Issued by W.H. Tipton & Co., a Gettysburg firm, the card shows how the battlefield was packaged for home viewers about fifteen years after the fighting.
