This panoramic print spreads across nearly a meter of the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania, where Union and Confederate armies fought from July 1 to 3, 1863. The Detroit Photographic Company, which produced many landscape views for tourists in the early 1900s, made it around 1903, about four decades after the battle. By then the ground had been set aside as a national military park, and states and veterans' groups were placing memorials across the fields. The long format and linen mounting suited the company's souvenir views, which showed the scale of the terrain.
