Rather than showing the battlefield, this color print reproduces the text of the Gettysburg Address, which Abraham Lincoln delivered on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of a national cemetery for the Union dead on the battlefield. His remarks lasted only a few minutes and followed a long oration by Edward Everett, yet they became the most quoted statement of the war's purpose. Boston publisher M.T. Sheahan issued this version in 1909, during a period when Lincoln's words were widely reprinted as patriotic keepsakes.
