This panoramic view, roughly 95 centimeters wide and mounted on linen, shows the Gettysburg battlefield about forty years after the fighting of July 1863. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American landscapes and towns, issued it around 1903, when the battle's anniversary was drawing veterans and visitors back to the Pennsylvania fields. The long format suits the rolling ground where Union and Confederate lines clashed over three days. Its date places it in the era when the battlefield was becoming a memorial landscape, with monuments and tablets marking where regiments had stood.
