This stereograph, numbered 725 in its series, looks north-east from a battlefield observatory at Gettysburg, a raised platform that let visitors survey the fields where the Union and Confederate armies fought in July 1863. The card was published by W.H. Tipton & Co. around 1879, when the battlefield was becoming a place of pilgrimage and memory and local photographers were selling views of it to tourists and veterans. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical photographs merge into a single image with depth, so the ground seems to fall away toward the distant ridges. The format was popular in parlors of the period, and such cards now document how the landscape looked in the years after the battle.
