Few places carry Civil War memories as heavily as Gettysburg, and this glass negative records a camp there in July 1865, two years after the battle that made the town famous. The camp belonged to Captain John J. Hoff, though the negative sleeve spells the name Huff, and the caption identifies it as a commissary of subsistence, the office that supplied food to the troops. Made with the wet collodion process, the image is part of a Library of Congress collection of Civil War glass negatives and was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a photographer known for his battlefield views.
