A Captain John J. Hoffs, spelled "Huffs" on the negative sleeve, is named as the clerk in this picture, taken at Gettysburg in July 1865, two years after the battle. Clerks like him kept the army's paperwork moving through the aftermath of the fighting, including records tied to the dead and wounded. The plate is a glass wet collodion negative, a process that required each sheet to be coated, exposed and developed within minutes. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, known for his Civil War battlefield views, though later catalogers have moved away from that attribution.
