Taken at Gettysburg in July 1865, this glass negative records Battery B of the 2nd U.S. Artillery, which its original caption identifies as Robertson's battery. The date falls two years after the battle fought there in early July 1863, when the town still bore the marks of the fighting and the national cemetery was being established. The plate was made by the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose glass while it was still wet, a demanding method that shaped how such images were made. Earlier catalogs credited the work to Alexander Gardner, so the maker is best treated as uncertain.
