Pickett's Charge, the Confederate assault on the Union center along Cemetery Ridge on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, is the climax this panoramic engraving sets out to show, with cavalry and artillery massed across the open fields in the foreground. The battle had turned on the second and third days, when Robert E. Lee gambled on breaking the Union line rather than retreating. Panoramas like this one were popular in the decades after the war, giving viewers a sweeping, bird's-eye sense of a fight that few could have taken in from any single spot on the field.
