Pickett's Charge, the massed Confederate assault on the Union center along Cemetery Ridge on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, is the moment this picture takes as its subject. Roughly 12,500 Confederate infantry advanced across open fields toward the stone wall and copse of trees held by Union troops, and most were shot down or driven back within about an hour. The attack ended Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North and is often seen as the turning point of the Civil War in the East, though the fighting at Gettysburg had already cost both armies heavily over the three days.
