Pickett's Charge, the Confederate assault on the Union center on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, is the moment this picture is built around. Roughly 12,000 Southern troops advanced across open fields toward Cemetery Ridge under artillery fire, and the attack collapsed within an hour, ending the three-day battle and turning the Confederate invasion of the North back toward Virginia. Gettysburg remains the largest battle fought in North America, and its third-day assault is still the most studied episode of the war.
