The record ties this print to the Boston lithography firm of L. Prang & Co., though that attribution is unverified. It belongs to the third day at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, when Confederate troops under Robert E. Lee sent a massed assault against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, known as Pickett's Charge. The attack failed with heavy losses and is usually seen as the turning point of the battle. Printmakers like Prang sold scenes like this to a public still drawn to Civil War memory.
