Seated in the doorway of his own home, John L. Burns is the figure that sets this view apart from the many scenes of Gettysburg photographed in 1863. Burns, an older local man, had taken up a musket as a civilian volunteer on the first day of the battle and was wounded, which made him something of a local hero. The picture survives as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical images meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. Its record notes that it was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a leading photographer of the battlefield.
