Few figures from the Battle of Gettysburg are as easy to pick out as John L. Burns, the elderly civilian who joined the Union line on the first day of fighting, armed with a musket and leaning on crutches. This stereograph shows him in that worn, makeshift state, and it is one of the few images that ties a named local man to the battle itself. Burns, a Gettysburg resident and veteran of the War of 1812, was wounded during the fighting, and his courage made him something of a local legend in the years after the war. The image was made in 1863, when the battlefield and town were still raw, and it was produced as a stereo pair meant to be viewed through a stereoscope.
