Peter Frederick Rothermel's large canvas of the Battle of Gettysburg was commissioned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and this engraving by John Sartain reproduces that painting for wider circulation. The original work was painted under an award from a commission appointed by the state legislature, which set out to commemorate the fighting of July 1863 on Pennsylvania soil. Sartain was among the leading American engravers of his day, and the print was copyrighted in 1872 under the name of the painter, the detail that marks it as a reproduction of the 1870 picture rather than an original image of the battle.
