The engraving shows Gen. Samuel W. Crawford's division, drawn from the Pennsylvania Reserves, pressing forward against Confederate lines on the late afternoon of July 2, 1863, west of Little Round Top. Crawford's men were among the Union units that struck the Confederate flank that evening, a movement that helped slow the enemy's assault on the Union left. *Harper's Weekly* published the wood engraving in its August 8, 1863, issue, when illustrated weeklies relied on artists' field sketches to bring battle scenes to readers who could not reach the front. The print offers a view of the fighting as the public was first shown it, shortly after the three-day battle ended.
