Inscribed beneath the image with the words "4th of July. Behind the breast works on the right," this drawing is dated to the day after the main fighting at Gettysburg ended. On July 3, 1863, Pickett's Charge broke against the Union center, and on July 4 Robert E. Lee's army began pulling back from the town and its ridges. The inscription points to the earthworks that defined the battle's final days. The drawing came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
