Its caption dedicates the picture "to the Soldiers of the United States," a sign that it was meant as a tribute to the Union troops rather than only a record of the fighting. Published in New York in 1867, four years after the battle, it was issued by Thomas Kelly and printed by William C. Robertson, and the hand-coloring on this impression adds color to what would otherwise be a black-and-white lithograph. The battle, fought July 1 to 3, 1863, in and around the Pennsylvania town, is generally regarded as a turning point of the Civil War, and postwar prints like this one helped shape how Northern audiences remembered it.
