The Currier & Ives lithograph titled "The battle of Gettysburg, Pa. July 3d. 1863" captures the final day of the three-day fight, when Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee launched the assault on the Union center at Cemetery Ridge that became known as Pickett's Charge. Published in New York by the firm, which sold hand-colored prints to a broad public, the sheet reflects how quickly the war was turned into popular pictorial news. Its date is given only as a bracketed estimate, so the exact year of issue is uncertain, though it would have reached buyers during or soon after the war. Collectors of Civil War imagery often note how such prints blended reporting with patriotic storytelling.
