Few civilians at Gettysburg became as famous as John L. Burns, an older local man who took up his musket and joined the Union skirmish line on the first day of fighting in July 1863. He was a veteran of the War of 1812, and his willingness to fight at his age earned him the nickname "the old hero of Gettysburg." This stereograph, made as two glass plates taken together, shows him holding his weapon with the crutch he relied on after he was wounded. Wet collodion negatives like these were made quickly in the field, and the paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect.
