Rather than a single rider frozen mid-gallop, this print shows an acrobat performing a backward somersault on horseback, broken into a series of successive positions. Its title names the zoopraxiscope, the projector Eadweard Muybridge developed to show such sequences as moving images, built on his earlier photographic studies of animal and human motion from the 1880s. Muybridge registered the copyright around 1893, when he was presenting these projected shows to the public. Today the print is worth a close look as an early step toward motion pictures, with each phase of the leap set side by side in color.
