A battery of artillery sets out for a mock battle in this 1909 view, with some men riding in carts and others mounted on horseback, a mix of transport typical of field units of the period. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a commercial agency whose photographers supplied New York news pictures to newspapers. The title was written on the negative or caption card and has not been independently verified. Military exercises of this kind drew press attention in the years before motor trucks began replacing horse-drawn transport, which makes the scene a useful record of that transition.
