Mounted soldiers of the 1st Battery, U.S. Army, are posed before New York's City Hall in this 1909 glass negative, with the building's domed Beaux-Arts face and the surrounding downtown streets behind them. In 1909 horses still did much of the Army's hauling and mounted work, so a picture like this shows a military tradition that was already giving way to motorized transport. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers. The title comes from the service's own caption data, which has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion for the troops' visit to City Hall is not recorded.
