Captain John O'Ryan sits mounted at the head of the 1st Battery as it sets out for a war game in New York, a field exercise in which National Guard units rehearsed combat maneuvers. The record dates the picture only to "8/09," and the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative, which has not been verified. The scene reflects a time when field artillery still relied on horses to pull guns and caissons, and O'Ryan later commanded the 27th Division in the First World War.
