This glass negative shows Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary mounted on horseback, a pose that monarchs had used for centuries to signal authority and military command. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negatives, which the Library of Congress notes has not been verified. Franz Joseph reigned from 1848 to 1916, so the picture likely dates from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The Bain agency circulated news photographs to newspapers, so the image shows how a European sovereign was presented to American audiences of that era.
