Numbered 42 in Eadweard Muybridge's series, this color lithograph shows a galloping horse as it would appear on a zoopraxiscope, the projector Muybridge built to animate sequences of motion. Earlier, he had used a row of cameras to photograph horses in motion, settling a long debate by showing that all four hooves leave the ground at once. Here those observations become a looping cycle of images meant to be spun rapidly so the animal seems to run. Dated around 1893, the print sits at the border between still photography and moving pictures.
