This print isolates two frames from Eadweard Muybridge's motion studies of a galloping horse, catalogued as Plate 631. Muybridge's series, *Animal Locomotion*, used a row of cameras with fast shutters triggered in sequence to break motion into separate images. The work helped settle a long-running question about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop, and it influenced later motion pictures. The catalog date of about 1887 matches the period when the plates were issued, though the caption card's details are unverified and worth checking against other sources.
