Two frames from a single plate show a horse in mid-jump, with the animal's body and legs caught at successive instants. The image comes from Eadweard Muybridge's photographic studies of animal movement, which he made with rows of cameras triggered in quick succession so that each exposure recorded a brief moment of motion. Muybridge's sequences, published in the late 1880s, were meant to show what the eye could not clearly see, such as the exact positions of a horse's legs during a leap. The record's details about the plate number and caption are unverified, but the sequence reflects the period's interest in measuring and studying animal locomotion.
