A rider in full hunting dress takes a fence mid-leap, the horse's body stretched across the frame, in this print from a fox hunt in Virginia. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington-area life and sold its pictures to newspapers and the public in the early twentieth century. Fox hunting in Virginia's Piedmont was a social ritual among landowners and their guests, and the jump was the moment that tested both horse and rider.
