A lone man walks beside a horse that hauls spruce logs over snow on a sled, a winter method Finnish loggers relied on for generations. Timber was among Finland's most important exports in the 1920s, and moving cut wood to frozen rivers or rail points during the cold months was hard, seasonal labor. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, whose travel photographs the Carpenters gathered for newspaper and magazine writing, and it shows an ordinary working scene of the forest economy.
