A man sits bundled in a low wooden sled, reins gathered in hand, as a horse pulls him along what appears to be a snowy or packed-dirt track. The platinum print, roughly 8 by 6 inches, dates to about 1930, and its maker is not recorded, so its details rest on the caption card rather than on firm documentation. Platinum printing was prized for its soft tones and long tonal range, and the Library of Congress acquired this example in 1934. Horse-drawn sleds were a common way to move people and goods across winter roads in many parts of the country, which gives the image its plain, everyday character.
