Few recruiting posters make a horse the center of the appeal, as this one does, casting the animal as a loyal partner rather than a tool of war. The record credits the design to Horst Schreck and places its printing in 1920 at the Engineer Reproduction Plant at Washington Barracks, D.C., an Army print shop. Its slogan promises "a courageous friend" to anyone who enlisted. The First World War had ended by then, but the Army still kept cavalry units, so the poster offers a glimpse of how the service courted recruits in peacetime.
