Few things set this 1961 view apart from other tavern photographs as clearly as the name over the door: the White Horse, a Greenwich Village bar on Hudson Street, where a horse is the only animal in sight. Phyllis Twachtman's exterior shot, taken for the New York World-Telegram and the Sun, shows a street-level scene with a Black man walking past the storefront. The tavern had long drawn writers and artists, most famously the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who was a regular there in the early 1950s. Photographs like this one record a neighborhood that was then a magnet for bohemian life, and its everyday street scene.
