In a North Carolina cotton field, a Black man guides a horse-drawn plow through the rows, a scene typical of Southern farming around 1902. Cotton was the region's main cash crop, and the labor of planting and cultivating it fell largely to Black workers, many of them tenants or sharecroppers farming land they did not own. The print is credited to D.A. Tompkins, a Charlotte figure known for promoting the textile industry. The date and caption come from an old card and have not been independently verified, so it is worth reading the image with that in mind.
