Here the camera stays on the head of Man o' War, the chestnut colt who became one of the most celebrated thoroughbreds in American history. Racing for owner Samuel Riddle in 1919 and 1920, he won 20 of his 21 starts, and his only defeat came in the 1919 Sanford Stakes. By the early 1930s he had long been retired to stud at Faraway Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, where admirers traveled to see him in person. The caption details for this portrait are not fully confirmed, so its exact circumstances remain uncertain.
