The sitter is identified in the record as Chief American Horse, an Oglala Lakota leader, and the photograph carries the Heyn and Matzen copyright mark and the number 695 from the studio's series. Studio portraits like this one were popular around 1900, when many Native leaders were photographed in traditional dress for commercial sale and for ethnographic collections. The caption details come from an old card and have not been independently verified, so the identification and date of [c1900] should be read as provisional. Horses were central to Plains life and to the names and status of Lakota leaders, which gives this portrait a link to the board's theme.
