Here the sitter is a Teton (Lakota) woman identified by her father's name, American Horse, a detail that ties the portrait to a family and a community rather than to a generic type. Edward S. Curtis made the image for *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey of Native peoples of the American West, and it appears on page 60 of volume 3. The work was copyrighted in 1908, and Curtis's large project was then collecting portraits, ceremonial scenes, and daily-life views at a time when many Plains communities were living under the restrictions of reservation life. Curtis's staging and choice of dress reflect his own romantic view of his subjects, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the series.
