Curtis shows the daughter of Bad Horse in a close profile, a pose he often chose when he wanted to emphasize a sitter's features and dress. The photograph dates to about 1905, when Edward S. Curtis was working on his long project to document Native peoples of North America, which would eventually fill twenty volumes. Cheyenne families of the Plains had built their lives around horses since the 1700s, so the picture also belongs to a wider story of horse culture, though the record does not say whether horses appear in the frame.
