This photograph shows a horse dressed in the insignia of a Blackfoot soldier, a detail that sets it apart from the portraits of people on the gallery board. Among the Blackfoot, or Siksika and related Blackfeet peoples, a warrior's horse could carry painted designs, feathers, and other markings that signaled its owner's rank, achievements, or membership in a soldier society. Edward S. Curtis made the picture around 1927 for *The North American Indian*, his multi-volume project documenting Native American life, and it appears in volume 18. Curtis often staged such scenes, so the regalia and horse reflect his ideas of traditional dress as much as everyday practice.
