Her father's name, Bad Horses, gives this Library of Congress portrait of a young Cheyenne girl its title, and the picture was made around 1905 by Edward S. Curtis, whose work documented Native peoples of the Great Plains and the American West. Curtis's broader project, *The North American Indian*, aimed to record traditional life before many communities were further changed by federal policy and settlement. Horses were central to Plains life, so a portrait tied to a father's name and a horse-related gallery theme reflects how closely family, identity and the animal were linked for Cheyenne families of that period.
