Unlike many hunt views in the collection, this one shows a boy riding among the men, a reminder that fox hunting in Virginia was often a family pursuit passed down through generations. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that recorded the capital and nearby regions in the early twentieth century. Between 1910 and 1930, organized hunts with hounds were a prominent social tradition in Virginia's Piedmont, where riders crossed open farmland.
