Horses are an unusual sight in polar photographs, since fodder was heavy to haul and dogs were the usual choice for sledge travel in the Arctic. This glass negative comes from the papers of Frederick Albert Cook, the American physician and explorer whose Arctic journeys spanned the 1890s and the first decade of the 1900s. The record does not name the specific expedition, so the photograph is best read as a glimpse of the logistics of northern travel. Its survival on glass, a fragile and easily broken medium, also preserves a detailed record of how early expeditions prepared and moved.
