Snow fills the valley floor, and a line of horses and sleds moves across it with the men walking alongside their animals. Winter travel in Alaska relied on teams like this one to haul supplies between settlements and mining camps, and the demand grew after the Klondike gold rush of 1897 to 1899 sent thousands of prospectors north. The picture belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection at the Library of Congress and was given to the library in 1951. It was made sometime between about 1900 and 1930, and it shows how much of the territory's commerce depended on animals and sleds.
