Men with horses and a wagon are clearing snow from the drive in front of the U.S. Capitol, and the scene is a reminder of how much street work once depended on animal power. Underwood & Underwood, a commercial firm known for its large stock of news and stereoscopic views, produced the image sometime between 1910 and 1930, a period when Washington still ran much of its winter cleanup with teams and manual labor before motor trucks became common. The Capitol dome and grounds make a fitting backdrop for a routine task that kept the government's front approach passable after a storm.
